WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

castle borl seen in a Vermeer painting

oil on canvas by Anton Krajnc
(in homage to Vermeer, three views of the mysterious castle Borl-Anckenstain)

and a photo-clipping from an old postcard...

small castle borl

Once upon a time there was a young Austrian boy, who used to travel with his parents
to spend their holidays in the land where his father was born...

They always stayed in the same castle hotel, high on a rock above the Drava river,
in their old neighbourhood, the Haloze,
famed wine growing region in the Northeast of Yugoslavia, now the Republic of Slovenia.

Many years went by, the parents died, a war swept the country.
The hotel closed down and fell into ruin.

Meanwhile, the boy had studied art at famous academies in Austria and Italy
and became an independent artist in a country across the ocean.
One day, forty years later, he opened a box to find an old postcard from 1958,
and even some photographs of himself under the tall trees
in the park of that hotel he had liked so much.
He remembered the castle on the rock, and wondered what had happened to it.
So he decided to travel back once more, to the country of his ancestors.
He went to see Grad Borl, and although what he found was only a ghost of its former glory days,
the old magic took hold immediately.

For the past several years, and through four governments, the artist has been negotiating
with the Cultural Ministry of the Republic of Slovenia,
to establish a base in Castle Borl,
for the Anton Krajnc Foundation and Museum.
They promised a decision by the end of 2004. It is now 2012...

to be continued...
