SMALL PLANES, BIG ART

a glimpse into the studio cum hangar

WELCOME

to ANTON KRAJNC's studio in La Cholla Airpark,
his hide-away in the cactus desert, near Tucson, Arizona.

The
artist designed this studio cum hangar himself,
and had it built in the exact spot he chose, among
cacti and mes-
quite and palo verde
trees,with five enor-
mous windows looking
North, to the Tortolita
Mountains, and a wall
separating the studio space
from the home for his Cessna 182.
Opening to the South, the big alumi-
nium door is activated by pressing an
electric button. The pilot can simply roll
out the door, taxi to the landing strip and
fly off. All our roads are private and they
double as taxiways. Naturally, airplanes have
.............................the right of way.............................
....................................................................................
In the bright and spacious studio, Krajnc' newest works are created.... Currently he is composing a book about the various stages of his creative life. Usually, the artist works on several pieces at the same time, makes paper - one version involved leaves from an agave boiled on an open fire outside the studio, and then mashed to pulp in his paper mill - fires his handmade and painted plates and sculpture in his own kilns, draws, carves wood, paints and creates bronze sculptures... never running out of ideas. To relax and unwind - and concentrate in a different way - he likes to fly a round, maybe over the Biosphere II, or to check what's happening on Mount Lemmon (our neighbour, 9oooft high and sporting the southernmost ski area in all of North America! 1 lift, 5 runs) or he takes off in the direction of Kitt Peak, whose white domed observatories can be seen from far away, reflecting the sun.
. ..............................................................................
...............................................................................
La Cholla Airpark is a multi-facetted
community of people, united by their
common interest in flying small planes.
Among them, our dear departed and much
missed friend, writer/aviator Fred Potts,
who was an expert on Alaska and bushflying.
........................And computers!........................
...............................................................................
RIP Gary Lichte. He built one of our most beautiful houses in the Airpark, and (all by himself in 7 years) a perfect Glassair,
with which he won Second Place in 1996. He's probably flying around with his own wings now!

!AVIATION HUMOUR ALERT!:

Do we dare make fun of PILOTS??
Of course, we do!

Q: How do you know if there's a fighter pilot at your party?
A: He'll tell you.

  • Q. What's the difference between God and fighter pilots?
    A: God doesn't think he's a fighter pilot.

  • On some air bases, the Air Force is on one side of the field
and civilian aircraft use the other side of the field,
with the control tower in the middle.
One day the tower received a call from an aircraft asking, "What time is it?"
The tower responded, "Who is calling?"
The aircraft replied, "What difference does it make?"
The tower replied "It makes a lot of difference.
If this is an American Airlines Flight, it is 3 o'clock.
If this is Air Force, it is 1500 hours.
If this is a Navy aircraft, it is 6 bells.
If this is an Army aircraft, the big hand is on the 12 and the little hand is on the 3.
If this is a Marine Corps aircraft, it's Thursday afternoon."

  • Subject: Flight Instruction
    Forget all that stuff about thrust and drag, lift and gravity;
an airplane flies because of money!

  • Interesting problem...
You are a South African bush pilot.
You fly in some critical medical supplies,
enjoy a quick lunch at the hospital.
It's a stifling 100 degrees in the shade
and you're eager to get back up to the cool, high blue yonder.

On the way back to your plane, you discover that
the only bit of shade, within 1 mile, has become very popular ...
You start calculating the distance to the plane door ...
and wonder ... "Do I feel lucky today?"

    If you have arrived here
directly from the LA CHOLLA AIRPARK Homepage,
or another Aviation site that links to us,
do stay around a while and visit more of Anton's and Dagmar's Website and our other pages.
Leave us a note, so we'll know you've come by.

May you fly in clear skies
and - ONCE UP THERE! - may all your winds be tailwinds
    ...

(A pilot reminded me that a tailwind is not something you'd want
    for take-off or landing!)

By the way, let's check the weather here in our part of Arizona!

And in case you are curious - here's the current weather in Austria:
    choose Vienna or Salzburg.
