THE FASCINATION OF THREE DIMENSIONS IN ART:
CREATIONS IN BRONZE!

anton with the sculpture
This sculpture, created by Anton KRAJNC in the winter of 2001/02,
marks the beginning of a series of interrelating bronzes,
whose images will evolve, but each will be a completed work in itself.

The title 'FINISTERRA' stands for the end of the road of the Camino
de Santiago: an ancient pilgrims' route in the North of Spain,
of which Anton Krajnc walked 600 miles from the border of France
to the City of Santiago de Compostela and beyond - to a place
called Finisterre. Where all lands end, and the ocean begins.

... somehow confirming the thought
that a new beginning always awaits at the end of a journey...

The PATH, the WAY, have been recurring themes in Krajnc' work,
an ongoing search for meaning in the present, forever poised between past and future.

Untying a boat/himself from a heart-shaped rock,
the Man is standing with one foot on solid ground, in the past,
the other foot on the boat, about to slip away...

DETAIL OF DOG
Relief images cover all surfaces, except for the Man and his Dog,
who symbolically brings him a piece of bread. Sustenance for the journey.

The lights from above are spirit and beacon:
one shining on the Man's head, the other one lighting the way.

Experiences and memories have left their mark on "land",
the images carried in the boat represent wishes and dreams.

An interesting detail:
The artist sculpted the Man's body naturalistically on the side of the land.
His past has shaped him.
The side facing the ocean, however, is left roughly modeled. The future awaits.
The sculpture is finished. But our imagination carries us onward.

"TRANSITION"

continues the journey from FINISTERRA.
It is the second bronze in this ongoing sculpture series dealing with past, present, and future.

Transition... moving on in life, leaving behind memories and experiences,
a jumble of images in the boat's wake.

The waters the boat ventures into are clear and untroubled.
The smooth surface is like a clean slate, ready to receive writing, marking, engraving...
traces of dreams and visions to be realized, reflections of new adventures yet to come.

The boat that was lying on the shore in the sculpture FINISTERRA, just being untied,
is now moving forward at a fast speed, as evidenced by its wake.
The woman in the stern holds a golden gyro, a directional device.

detail with muse She was there, in FINISTERRA, already in the boat,
tiny and easily missed amidst all the action,
but beckoning the Man to come aboard.
Who is she? A muse? The Man's spirit? His conscience?
Does she have a name?

There are fish in the boat. A rich catch,
representing the "gifts" we have received
in our life. (All are individually cast. Some are goldplated, some silverplated, some even cast colored glass! They just lie there. Pick them up and hold them in your hand!)
The artist added a small but significant touch:
a liquid level.
Straight ahead under the ship's bow.

The blue-green iridescent colors of the water are not painted on,
but created by firing at different temperatures.

There will be an edition of seven boat-sculptures world-wide.
The individual stands will each be one of a kind.
The first is a stylized fish-shape, standing on its tail,
upright yet anchored. The sculpture is about 7ft tall.
The Boat in "transition", delicately balanced in this frame,
seems to be moving forward unerringly,
gliding into a future that holds the promise of more "fish", more gifts...

and B) HOW DID IT ALL START?
It was just a natural progression from two to three dimensions...
when SPHERES first fascinated the artist.
